“Spomenik: The End of History”

-

Fascinated by today’s hybrid landscape in which the differences between center and periphery, city and country, and culture and nature are no longer clearly defined, JAN KEMPENAERS has photographed monuments erected by the communist regime of former Yugoslavia.

Paying attention to their careful integration in the landscape, he demonstrates that landscapes are turned into sites of memory. Commemorating the common traumatic experiences during the Second World War and the partisan battles, these monuments were intended to provide the people of Yugoslavia with a common history and identity that would be productive in its future evolution. However, in the late twentieth century, these landscapes were torn by nationalist and ethnic violence and their monuments are now neglected. The idea of progress has been buried under the weight of history and the monuments, which were once machines of sightseeing and (photographic) image production, have become obsolete and invisible.” – by STEVEN JACOBS for Flemish Institute for visual, audiovisual and media art.

And good news: a book entitled “Spomenik / JAN KEMPENAERS” published by Roma PublicationS and distributed by Motto has been released this summer. More infos here.

It’s almost hard to believe these bizarre, massive structures are real!

ELAD LASSRY’s photographs – everyday and design objects, fruit and vegetable still lifes, human and animal portraits, landscapes and cityscapes – allude to visual features and image constructions that have been used in photography, advertising, magazines and illustrated books, and in films.

His photographic works, which do not usually exceed the format of a magazine or printed material, comprise either collages of acquired printed matter or newly-composed photographs. The collages consist of found illustrated single and double-page spreads from magazines which LASSRY either reworks by heightening their design elements or reuses them several times for individual works as duplicated printed products.

However, they are almost too intensely coloured, too abstract, too staged. This process of visual emphasis, they are presented in matching coloured frames which thematicise critically the relationship between the image and the “picture” as a utilitarian object, refer to the history of the presentation of objects as art and the aestheticization of perception.

What emerges is something less iconic, an image that meditates on visual connections, imagistic tropes and the indexical aspects that can enter photographic presentation.

“I’m fascinated by the collapse of histories,” he explains. “And the confusion that results when there is something just slightly wrong in a photograph.” – by ELAD LASSRY

Miss Lotion

Miss Lotion was born with a pen strapped to her hand. Drawing is a part of everyday life for the Danish-born artist who resides in Copenhagen. She draws and paints for recreation and because she simply can’t help herself. Miss Lotion works with illustration and visual art, with clients in the advertising, fashion and editorial world. Originally she is an educated graphic designer, but after graduation she found herself taking direction towards illustration and now mixing the two disciplines to form a clearer language.
Her artwork tends to be personal, based on her own reflections of her experiences and surroundings, particular situations and conversations.
She sketches on anything she has to hand, be it napkins, paper or beer mats, usually with a black pen, and her drawings form the beginnings of her illustrative ideas. Some of these ideas progress to paintings on wood or canvas, murals, T-shirts and many other applications.
Collaborations with other artists are a great inspiration and motivation for her. Over the years she has worked on and instigated many group projects such as collaborative drawings, murals, books and exhibitions with like-minded artists.
